Just like there are tides on Earth, there can also be tides on stars caused by the gravitational pull of nearby, super dense objects (like planets). Sometimes a nearby object that’s very, very dense (like a black hole), can have so much pull that it causes a tidal disruption, effectively tearing a star apart.
