LAB 024 - BHM: STEM Edition

It’s our Season 2 finale AND it’s Black History Month, so we did something special for this episode. We turned to you, our audience, to highlight those of you who are Black in STEM.

At the end of the last episode, we asked you to send us audio about being Black in STEM. You all delivered! We chose a few clips to share in our last episode and we had a blast recording it!

We started out hearing from Chandler, who is in training to be a structural engineer. Then we jumped to Cicely, a 5th year PhD student at NYU studying chemistry and materials science. Titi was really excited about these two because they’re very close to her field. All this talk about engineering and materials led me to some serious appreciation for bridges and tunnels. If you want a deeper dive, check out this video!

Then we heard from Cinda, the director of the Center for Tropical Island Biodiversity Studies at the School for Field Studies in Bocas del Toro, Panama. Cinda’s work is so exciting and I had to reel in my enthusiasm. Remember how I almost got on my fish soapbox? Well now you can read all about the fish I mentioned! Our second biologist is one of my close friends, Randy. He’s a radiologist at Massachusetts General Hopital and gave us a great reminder to about the importance of mammograms.

We heard from some folks doing great work in STEM education and outreach - Mercadi, Kierna, and Serena. You can watch Science Fair on Amazon Prime or your favorite streaming service.

We wrapped with some great audio from our guest experts about what it means to be Black in STEM, and we couldn’t have said it better. If you want to learn more and or join the #BlackandSTEM community, follow @BLACKandSTEM on Twitter.
